Seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
