Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
